Parallel Lines And Transversal

If the distance between two lines in a plane are same everywhere, then they are called parallel lines. otherwise called intersecting lines. The distance between two intersecting lines is zero. If two or more lines parallel to the same line, then all the lines are parallel to each other. In the given figure, m is parallel to n. The two lines m and n are parallel then we can write it as large mparallel n  and "l" is the transversal.

Transversal Lines : A straight line intersecting two or more straight lines in distinct points is known as a transversal to the two given lines.

In the figure, the line "l" is a transversal which intersect two lines m and n forming eight angles, large angle 1,angle 2,angle 3,angle 4,angle 5,angle 6,angle 7, and large angle 8.

Illustration : In the given figure, check which lines are parallel.

Solution : As the distance between two lines in a plane are same everywhere.Hence AB,CD,EF are parallel lines. Also MN is a transversal as it intersects two or more straight lines in distinct point .

Illustration : In the given figure, check which lines are parallel.

Solution :  As the distance between two lines is zero.Hence the two lines i.e. AB and CD are intersecting lines.None of these lines are parallel.
